Volunteering in the UK can be traced back to medieval times where there was an urge to aid the poor and the sick. In the 19th Century, organised groups of volunteers started to appear such as the YMCA which began in London in 1844!

International Volunteer Day is on the 5th December and was created by the United Nations in 1985 to celebrate the power and importance of Volunteerism.

Just think in the small town in Market Drayton we have a huge number of volunteers who help to keep things running, like the Festival Drayton Centre, the local Library, the Food Bank and without these wonderful people giving up their time for free these amenities many not be available to our community.

So, let’s not forget and be thankful for the hundreds of people who volunteer at our hospitals, hospices, community projects because without them, our community would be a lot different!
