Stem4’s Parent Mental Health Day encourages understanding and awareness of the importance of the family as a system where parent and carer mental health is as important a focus as young people’s mental health.
The theme for 2023 is #BuildFamilyResilience, and PMHD will aim to explore how family resilience can be built, minimising the negative impact on either the parents and carers or their children and young people.
Stem4 is a UK registered charity that promotes positive mental health in teenagers and those who support them including their families and carers, education professionals, as well as school nurses and GPs through the provision of mental health education, resilience strategies and early intervention.
Their mission is to foster the development of good mental health in teenagers through enhancing early understanding and awareness in individuals, their families, schools and the community, promoting shared early detection and signposting towards prompt action and intervention.
Further details can be found here and resources can be accessed via their website.
Adele Ballantyne, Relationship Therapist at Eleda Consultancy, comments about the importance of parental mental health awareness:
“There has never been a more important time to support the mental health of families in this country. The impact on families post Covid, cost of living increases, and parental separation have caused huge financial and emotional pressure on families. The need for raising awareness to identify when family members are struggling and providing much needed support is essential if we are to navigate our way through these difficult times. At the heart of family life are parents. When parents are emotionally exhausted it has a direct impact on their work, home, relationships and most of all their children.
When parents seek help, signposting to professionals who can listen, help to create coping strategies and build resilience is just one way we can help.”
