When a person dies, their estate—which includes all of their assets and possessions —needs to be managed. This process involves distributing them as inheritance after paying off any liabilities and taxes. If the deceased person left a valid will, this process is usually handled by a person known as the executor. In some cases, the executor may need to acquire a specific document, called a “Grant of Probate”, in order to sell certain assets like property or shares and distribute the estate.
However, if the deceased did not leave a will, the estate management process is slightly different. In this situation, the person responsible for managing the estate is referred to as an “administrator”. The administrator must obtain a “Grant of Representation” to have the legal authority to manage the estate.
